The Examiner notes that Martha Stewart is launching a pet care line. (She is launching the line at a big box store, which is a bit disappointing considering Ms. Stewart's Do-It-Yourself approach--what about the many smaller, homey boutiques, Martha?)

Erin Cunningham of The Examiner had a suggestion for Martha's new product line--a pet stroller! Says Erin:

Not really a necessary product, but a fun one. While most dogs should be walking as opposed to riding in a stroller, pet strollers are a great, safe way to let your cat explore the outdoors. Although you may be skeptical of this idea for cats at first, some cats absolutely love riding in these strollers. Definitely a luxury for pet owners, maybe Martha will consider adding pet strollers to her line.

We agree with Erin, although I would point there are many reasonable purposes for dogs to use a pet stroller--older dogs and injured dog, for example. Also, people with smaller dogs who want to take longer walks and jogs can use a pet stroller--their dogs can walk for a while, and then stroller the rest of the way.

What would a Martha Stewart pet stroller look like? I'm thinking it would be made of branches from trees from the backyard, hand-made twine, and fabric rescued from old pillows! :)

I just had to write and tell you how much I love my new pet stroller. I ordered it one day and it arrived the very next day. So very easy to put it together. I told my son he would be proud of me. I took Jozie, my four pound Yorkie, for a ride around the inside of the house. We haven’t been outside yet. She seemed to really like it and I am sure she will like it even more when she tires on our walks. Like I have told people, it is nicer than my childrens’ strollers.

Madeline says, "This is actually a pet stroller that Nicky has and uses when we go on vacation so I could bring him in the stores etc. It is great and also comes in handy when we go on our long walks and he is just too tired to walk back. Cats Getting Sun in a Pet Stroller

No sooner did I post about a Twitpic of a cat in a stroller than a customer and friend of ours posted her own photo to Twitpic. @fvrythingpr purchased her pet stroller so her cats can enjoy some fresh air and sun from the safety of the stroller. She posted her picture just today with the comment, "My cats enjoying the sun in a pet stroller from @metropawlis." (Metropawlis is the Milwaukee store associated with JustPetStrollers.com.)

We ran across a very nice shot of a cat in a pet stroller posted on Twitter via TwitPic. The shot was posted by @MrBasilCat, who said, "First pet stroller outing of the year! I loves my stroller ^..^".

MrBasilCat is a cat with his own Twitter account. He describes himself as a "Cool tuxedo tomcat, lover of tasty morsels, lovely ladies, and fuzzy blankets." The account is maintined by the cat's human companion, @Mermaidmoon.

Stroller Week at the Cat's Meow

Over on Catster.com's blogs, the Cat's Meow blog is having Stroller Week, focusing on pet strollers! The first blog post is full of great information (and links to Just Pet Strollers)!

Karen Nichols writes:

I bought a pet stroller for Skeezix a couple of years ago, and am thrilled with the purchase. Skeezix LOVES strolling. He sits quietly and attentively, watching the neighborhood go by. Mao, my cranky Siamese, was not as thrilled with strollering at first, but once he got the hang of it, he really began to enjoy it. About half the time we take both cats out together. It’s funny to watch the two of them in the cabin — I swear, they jostle for control of the “front seat” just as young children would.

The blog includes photos of Skeezix and Mao in their Jeep Rubicon Pet Stroller from Pet Gear (although she notes that the Rubicon is a jogging stroller with a fixed front wheel, so if she were to do it again, she might consider a Pet Gear AT3 Pet Stroller with a rotating front wheel next time).

Crippled dog gets a pram

A heartbreaking but hopeful story comes from far away, out of Tasmania off of Australia. Cookie, a three-year-old shih tzu, was left without a single working leg after being rolled over by a car. He recently had one leg amputated and the remaining three are broken.

Luckily Cookie is on the mend, and his owner was happy to find a pet pram (or pet stroller) to help the dog get around. "When I went in (to buy the pram) I said 'I'm not trying to be Paris Hilton . . . I have a very injured little puppy'," Cookie's owner said.

Cat Enjoys Sun in Pet Stroller

One of the most common uses we hear for pet strollers is to permit cats to enjoy the out of doors safely. Instead of letting them roam free, which the Humane Society of the United States says is unsafe, people instead use pet strollers as a safe alternative to allow cats to enjoy sun, fresh air, and the outdoors.

Pet Stroller Helps Two Dogs--One Older, One Younger

We received some helpful and thoughtful feedback from a Pet Stroller user. She shared how and why she and her dogs use a pet stroller.

The needs and uses for a pet stroller are as varied as are dogs, cats, and their human pet companions. (Some people call them "pet owners.") Here is another purpose to add to the list--how do you walk your dogs if one of them is older and another is younger? Here is one person's solution:

My dogs like to walk together but my older one can't walk as far. With a stroller I can walk them together and when the older one gets tired he can ride in the stroller. Also to get to the walking trails we have to pass a house with a vicious dog-we have already been attacked by it once-this way they can both ride enclosed in the stroller till we get to the trails and then I can safely take them out and start our walk.

Loss of a Pet and a Home for a New Friend

My wife and I recently lost our cat of 11 years. His passing was unexpected. As many of you pet lovers know firsthand, it is very hard to lose a feline or canine best friend. While a new pet can never replace one that has left, it does provide a way to channel your feelings of loss into a positive direction. I wanted to briefly share our story.

Sassy was a cat who was living on the street and being abused by neighborhood kids. A friend of ours took him in, but she needed someone to adopt Sassy because her daughters have asthma. The day we picked him up was sad and funny; our friend told her daughters that Sassy was going to a good home and they had to be happy, so they all had big smiles while tears rolled down their cheeks.

For over a decade we provided a good home for Sassy. His time on the street stuck with him; even though he was always safe and secure in our home, he'd run and hide whenever a friend came to visit. (Because Sassy never showed his face around strangers, our friends got to thinking we had an imaginary pet.)

One pleasant surprise was that despite Sassy's nervousness, he actually loved hopping in his pet stroller. We take him onto our balcony, and the pet stroller was perfect for keeping him safe--we never had to worry he'd jump off in pursuit of a bird! He'd sit in his stroller and watch traffic go by, stalk birds, and enjoy the sun. The photo at right is a shot of Sassy in his pet stroller.

One morning we woke up thinking we had a healthy cat, but a trip to the vet revealed he had a large tumor. Just as we were adjusting to this sad news, Sassy feel acutely ill (possibly due to the medication or as a result of the needle aspiration that was performed.) He passed away that night very peacefully in our arms.

It was hard to come home to an empty house, and we were very sad for days. In fact, we remain very sad and occasionally tear up thinking about Sassy. But we also knew we could provide a safe and loving home to another pet, so we visited a local animal shelter. (While we'd love to furnish a home for many pets, my allergies prevent more than one at a time. Heck, owning even one pet requires me to be on medication, but it's totally worth it!)

So now Turtle is a part of our home. He got that name because he's a tortoiseshell cat. Also, when he first got to the shelter, he was very shy but later "came out of his shell."

Turtle is more inquisitive and comfortable than Sassy was. He'll hide when people come to our home, but only for a minute; within 10 minutes he's sitting next to our guests and asking to be pet. We were surprised with how quickly Turtle came to feel comfortable in our home, and loving him has helped with our mourning for Sassy.

We haven't yet taken Turtle out on our balcony in his pet stroller because it'll be winter for another two months in our part of the country. Some people use pet strollers in winter for transportation (which keeps animals' paws safe from ice and salt), but we'll wait for the warmth of spring before Turtle gets his taste of the out of doors from the safety of his pet stroller.

A Cat "Strikes Gold": Adoption and a Pet Stroller!

The Herald Bulletin of Indiana has an article both heartwarming and heartbreaking about adoption. Written by Maleah Stringer, program director of Anderson Animal Care and Control, the article discusses the need for pet adoption and tells the story of a cat named Sandman.

Sandman was adopted by a lady from Scottsdale, AZ because his Petfinder photo reminded her of the 18-year-old cat she had lost the year before. The woman flew from Arizona to Indiana to meet Sandman, and "two hours later she and Sandman flew back to Arizona."

Stringer says Sandman is living the good life. "He has a cat condo complete with a hammock. He even has a pet stroller! He will live a fabulous life. And he doesn’t even have a pedigree. He truly is a lucky little kitty."

Sandman was renamed by their new human companions. He is now called Jamu which is Indonesian for “Medicine.” "They explained that he is their medicine for the heart."

Reason to Buy a Pet Stroller: Meet people!

For years, we've been collecting a list of reasons people purchase a pet stroller.

A couple months ago, we ran into a couple walking their cute dog in a Happy Trails PLUS Pet Stroller from Pet Gear. Turned out they purchased it from us at Just Pet Strollers (at our Milwaukee pet boutique, Metropawlis)!

I asked what they liked about it, and they said it was a great way to meet people. Every time they stroll their dog, people stop them to ask about the pet stroller and their pooch. Some people laugh and many people are curious, and they meet more people when they use the pet stroller than when they walk their dog on the leash. (They walk their dog plenty, of course, in order to keep their pet healthy!)

So, we added a new reason to our list:

Meeting People (new): Walking your dog or cat in a pet stroller is a terrific way to meet people. (It might not be the way to spend time with your dog or cat if you want to be left alone!)
Malls: You should check first, but some customers are finding that malls will permit dogs and cats if they're in pet stroller rather than on a leash. This isn't common just yet, but who knows--maybe someday all malls will let pet lovers stroll with their four-legged friends!
Service Dogs: We've heard from several customers who take their dogs to hospitals and senior homes. Strollers keep their pets contained, but they also elevate the dog so that people in beds and wheelchairs can pet them!
Balconies: Some customers with balconies want to let their pets outside but are afraid they may decide to leap. With a pet stroller, these people can get their pets safely from inside to outside so that pets can enjoy the view with their human companions.
Alternative to pet carriers: Rather than using a heavy carrier, some customers find it much easier to use a pet stroller. Why carry your dog or cat when you can roll them more easily?
Older pets: We had one customer thanked us profusely for her "brand new dog." Seems her older pooch was getting exhausted on his walk to the dog park, so once he got there the dog was too pooped to play. Now, the dog is rolled to the dog park and "explodes" from the pet stroller ready to play!
Longer walks: Customers of smaller pooches tell us that their dogs tire out on longer walks. Rather than cut short exercise, folks can walk their dogs until they poop out, then continue long walks with the dogs resting in the stroller!
Multiple dogs: One customer has three Yorkies and found life was much easier when they were in the stroller so they couldn't run in three different directions! She says, "They love it! "
Trips to the vet: One customer said her stroller keeps her pet safer and healthier at the vet's office. "I don't have to worry about them being on the floor with germs from other sick animals. After all, that's why most animals are at the vets."
Traveling: One customer who took a lot of driving trips especially liked the Kittywalk models, which include a detachable carrier and collapsible frame. This allowed her to keep her pet secure while in the car and easily roll the pet into pet-friendly hotels.
Cats: Cats can be tough to walk on leashes--if you don't get them into harnesses at a young age, some cats will never adjust to a harness. A cat stroller is a great way for cats to get some fresh air.
Ice & salt in winter: Northerners reports that their dogs paws take a beating on the ice and salt of roads and sidewalks. Instead, they use a pet stroller to get their dogs to parks where they can play in the snow safely. (Pick a pet stroller with larger wheels for wintertime rolling!)
Festivals: One couple liked to walk their dog to local festivals, but between the crowds, noise, and other aggressive animals, they found it stressful rather than relaxing. With the pet stroller, they keep their small dog safe and the pooch still enjoys getting some fresh air.

Pets at work: One customer takes her cat to work. The stroller makes it easy to do, provides the pet a safe and quiet place to retreat, and keeps her pet in her cubicle rather than roaming around.
Older humans: Pet strollers are great for older pets who aren't as mobile as they used to be, but one customer reports the stroller is great for her 83-years-old mother: She can walk the pet and has something on which to lean as she gets around.
Weather emergencies: One customer said their pet stroller came in very handy during a weather warning. With sirens sounding, she got her pet into the stroller. If you're a pet lover, I'm sure you've heard about the $155,000 dog. Lancelot Encore was cloned from DNA from Nina and Edgar Otto's late dog, Lancelot. BioArts International created him in South Korea, where he was born 10 weeks ago. The Ottos say he's the first single-birth, commercially cloned puppy in the United States.

Lancelot Encore gets around on his own four paws, of course, but he also has a pet stroller. According to an article in the Miami Herald, the yellow Labrador has a--what else?--yellow pet stroller!

The Oregonian has a nice and personal article about the value of using a pet stroller. Deb Wood purchased a pet stroller for her aging dog, Goldie. "I calculated that I put about 250 miles on it during the last months of her life. She loved to ride in it."

Recently, another dog, Radar, was feeling under the weather, so Deb used the pet stroller again. "Radar happily walked for about a mile with the other dogs while I pushed the empty stroller. When he began to tire, I put him the the stroller. The younger dogs and I then picked up the pace and we went another three miles. Everyone was happy."

Pet Stroller Idea: Heat a Pillow

In a column entitled Pets with Deb Wood that appears in The Oregonian, she shared an idea that all pets may like, especially older ones. In the article, "I practice what I preach: the joys of walking your dog in the rain," she tells of taking her pets on walks in the rain, and she shares an idea for making a trip more enjoyable for a dog in a pet stroller:

Radar is a little more of a worry. At age 13, his health has become more uncertain. I think the next walk, I'll put him in the pet stroller with a buckwheat pillow I heat in the microwave and a warm blanket. I think he's earned a warm ride in the cool weather.

Making an older dog a little more comfortable with a warm pillow or blanket is an excellent idea (but please make sure you warm the items properly and safely!)

The Expedition Pet Stroller I ordered from justpetstrollers.com arrived today. I chose the color Burgundy and I love it.

The only parts that I had to put together were the wheel mechanisms and handle. They went together easily. The only slip-up was that I forget the width of the stroller and put it together in a small bedroom. I had to take it partly apart to get it through the bedroom door, but that wasn't much of a problem.

Once I had the stroller put back together in the living room, I put my medium size dachshunds (3 of them) into the stroller and pushed them out the front door. The large wheel sizes on front and back makes for an easy ride.

My dogs are used to being pushed distances in pet strollers, so they took to this new stroller right away. We had a great time walking considerably farther than these small dogs can walk on their own. Of course, I still walk my dogs, but to get exercise for myself and a fun experience for my dogs, we take the pet stroller. The stroller is made well and should last a long time with care. Deborah writes about how cat owners who want to let their felines get some fresh air shouldn't use a collar, since cats can escape easily. Some cats may take to a harness, although some won't. And for those cats, there are pet strollers!

Did you see Tori and Dean's show this week? If so, you saw the Walk 'n Roll Pet Stroller they got from Just Pet Strollers.

Alas, they went for a walk on a beach with their Walk 'n Roll, which is simply not an appropriate pet stroller for that use. Using a Pet Stroller for Benefit Pet Walks

We've found that the reasons people purchase pet strollers are almost as varied as the people and pets who use them. From time to time, we share a new pet stroller purpose that someone shares or we run across on the Internet, and here's one so obvious I'm surprised it's never come up before: A pet stroller makes a great and safe way for smaller pets to participate in charity pet walks.

We saw this post for the "Paws and Claws" benefit walk in Pittsburgh to benefit Orphans of the Storm. Their rule is that "All pets must be on a leash or in a pet stroller." We think this is an excellent use of pet strollers to enhance the lives of people and their pets and to keep dogs safe from other aggressive animals. (Or if your dog is aggressive, a pet stroller is an excellent way to keep them away from other pooches at a big event like this.)

We would've promoted the event here in advance, but alas the post was made on the same day as the event (which happened yesterday). We hope all of the dogs and humans had a great time!

Pet Strollers: Safety and Convenience in Emergencies

We've had customers tell us how handy their pet strollers were in difficult times, but we got to experience this ourselves this weekend. The Midwest has been suffering through some severe storms, and here in Milwaukee we had tornado warnings on two days over the weekend.

In the old days, we would've had to cram our cat into a carrier, bounce him around as evacuated to the basement of our condo building, and then left him in the tight quarters until returning to our home. But, things were different because we have a Jeep Wrangler Pet Stroller.

When the tornado sirens sounded, Geri and I zipped our finicky cat in the safety of his pet stroller. We were able to grab a couple sodas on the way out of our condo and placed them in the stroller's parent tray. We rolled Sassy to the elevator and got him and us down to the basement with ease. And, since we were stuck for 45 minutes waiting for the storm to pass, Sassy was comfortable in his pet stroller--he could lay down, stand up, and peer out the front and back of the pet stroller, which made his wait in the basement much more pleasant.

Sassy, we, and our condo are all fine. Unfortunately, the repeated storms have left quite a bit of flooding in our city. Hopefully, the weather will turn better and allow people to dry out soon!

It's nice to know that if and when we need to get our cat to safety, we can do so quickly and easily with our pet stroller!

The LA Times has an article, entitled "High-end shopping goes to the dogs at Newport Beach's Fashion Island mall," about a mall that encourages shoppers to bring their pooches.

The article says, "Welcome to Orange County's unofficial dog mall, otherwise known as Fashion Island -- an upscale collection of shops and restaurants in the even more upscale enclave of Newport Beach. Startling as it may be to out-of-town shoppers, dogs are everywhere, even inside Bloomingdale's, Neiman Marcus and Macy's."

One couple pushed their Chihuahua-mix Daisy through the shop in a pet stroller. "We usually take her with us wherever we go," said the stroller.

Pink Poodle in a Pink Pet Stroller

This article isn't about pet strollers, but it mentions one--and you may find the article thought provoking.

Joy Douglas, of Boulder, CO, died her toy poodle's fur pink. Cici's dye job was accomplished using pureed organic beets and egg whites massaged into her white coat while she basked under a heat lamp. Joy does this so that Cici can be a 10-pound advertisement for breast cancer awareness.

But the city of Boulder and Humane Society of Boulder Valley disagrees, and Joy now faces a $1,000 fine and 90 days in jail. Turns out there's a 30-year-old ordinance forbidding the dyeing or coloring of rabbits, fowl or other animals. The nearly law intended to prevent Easter-time trade in baby rabbits, chicks and ducks colored with dyes.

Since the story broke, Joy has received some support and donations for a breast cancer fund. One donor gave her a hot-pink pet stroller. "Cici spends her days lolling in it, chewing on a hair clip and yipping in warning when another of her dogs, Pierre the Yorkie, tries to join her."

Here is an article from KSN.com, an NBC affiliate.

The article is about pets who have weight problems. For one pet, the problem is caused by the fact the dog cannot exercise. "She's had Dyplasia going on the last 3 years, and it's just gotten worse and worse, and now she's developed arthritis on top of it," said one pet owner.

Slentrol is the first diet drug for dogs approved by the F-D-A this month. The article discussed the 9-month weight-loss plans for dogs.

One pet owner is using a pet stroller to help her dog get around while she loses weight. "We try to exercise her, and we go on walks. everyone around here knows me as the lady with the stroller because Melani will only make it about halfway, and in the stroller she goes. She rides the rest of the way home!"

Of course, pets need exercise, and a pet stroller shouldn't be a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. Still, it's nice to know pet strollers can help pets with disabilities and who are struggling with weight issues, as a result.

Salon mentions Pet Strollers

Salon, a wonderful e-magazine I enjoy reading, recently featured an article about pets and veterinary bills, and this article mentions pet strollers. The author notes that we pet lovers are shelling out more and more for vet services, and she attributes is to several causes:

One is the "increasing acceptance of the notion that pets are family members." The second is that pets are increasingly getting the same treatments as chemo and dialysis.

The last, according to the author, is the luxur-ification of pet's lives. The article states, "For those who can afford it... there's no shame in spending disgusting amounts of money on stylish sweaters, "doggy daycare," Prozac and $400 pet strollers (yes, pet strollers)." The implication is that pet strollers are frivolous and unnecessary--a silly luxury, in the eyes of this editorialist.

I don't disagree with the author about the luxur-ification of pet's lives, but I wonder why she has to be so negative about pet strollers. As mentioned elsewhere on this blog, many people get pet strollers for good reasons. Some have pets who are old or injured; some want to keep their pets safe on busy city streets on their way to parks; some want to take longer walks than their pets so they walk their pet part of the way and stroll them the rest; some use pet strollers to permit their cats to safely get fresh air; and many cat and dog lovers simply want to spend more quality time with their pet.

By mentioning the upper end of pet stroller costs and referencing pet strollers as she has, the author has diminished a legitimate product with serves a legitimate need for many pet lovers. I think it is too bad when journalists don't take more care.

We found these terrific photos of Taz in a pet stroller at maryjos' Digital Scrapbook Place. maryjos says he's not able to walk much anymore but is just miserable when left behind. She got him this pet stroller and she reports he is "clearing enjoying his special treatment."

Like the walking strollers for pets, they are enclosed, with plenty of ventilation keeping your pet safely inside. Yes, there are strollers for cats and other pets too.

Bicycle riders are not left out when it comes to transporting furry friends. Tow behind strollers let pet owners get their exercise while their pet rides safely along in the rear. For those bikers who prefer to let their pets ride in front, handlebar baskets are a great choice. A throwback to when bicycles served as a primary means of transportation, the pet basket mounts of the handlebars. Toy dog breeds are gaining in popularity and many owners appreciate their small size. It is not uncommon to see owners carrying their companions around town. The totes I have looked at all appear to be designed with your pets comfort in mind.

For those owners who prefer that their pet pal walk along, there are even designer bags that the dog can wear as an accessory. Designer bags for your Bichon and totes for your terrier can be had for a price.

Even pet leashes have gone high end. Owners who are not satisfied with just any old leash can find unique and on of a kind tethers. Fashionable leashes are widely available with many sporting vibrant decorator colors. Custom made leashes may reflect a favorite theme and some are encrusted with costume jewelry. Just add a matching collar and your pet can make the scene sporting bling that is fit for a four legged king or queen.

Top ten pampered pooch gifts

Merry Christmas! We hope you and your pets are enjoying the safest and happiest of holiday seasons! (Watch the holiday ribbon--we don't want any pets to end up in the emergency room today because they chewed on the wrong thing this Christmas.)

It's a little late for the holiday season (and on the opposite side of the world), but New Zealand's Fairfax New Zealand Ltd included pet strollers on their list of "Top ten pampered pooch gifts."

The article from Reuters says "Spending that would once have seemed extravagant, such as on doggy day cares, pet cemeteries and dog strollers, have become commonplace with Americans estimated to spend about $US48 billion on pets in 2007 - nearly twice the amount of a decade ago, according to consumer research company Packaged Facts." (We love our pets! What can we say?)

Number five on its list is the "All terrain dog stroller." Says the article, "Why walk when you can ride? A range of dog strollers are now on the market with price ranging widely, and including more and more snazzy versions, such as the $US400 stroller/bike trailer with optional ski attachment. Of course, we take offense at the idea that pet strollers replace walking for your pet. We know people say that sort of thing when they don't take a moment to consider how a pet stroller may be appropriate for older or injured pets or for people who want to safely take their pets with them to places other than a park or down the street; still, it's nice to see pet strollers getting this kind of recognition from an organization such as Reuters (and all the way from New Zealand, no less!)

Blaze, my 52 pound English bulldog has bad hips, bad knees and is 8 years old, so she can't get around like she used to.

Fighting like cats and dogs? A pet stroller solution!

The Dog Whisperer found a novel and very interesting use for a pet stroller. He was advising a person who had a dog and cat that wouldn't get along. The cat had taken to hiding all the time.

The Dog Whisperer diagnosed the problem as being with the cat and not the dog. The kitty was acting aggressively towards the puppy, and once the canine took umbrage and started pushing back, the cat would run and hide.

Cesar worked on getting the cat to be less aggressive, but he also had to work with the dog to begin to accept the cat and to act gently toward the cat.

What do with this situation? Here's a very interesting idea: Use a pet stroller! The Dog Whisperer placed the kitty in the stroller and took the dog and cat for a walk. The idea was to have the dog begin to associate the cat as being part of his pack. It seemed to work!

So, there you have it! Another interesting use for a pet stroller!

The Nantucket Independent has an article by Jan Jaeger, owner of Geronimo's, Ltd., a Nantucket pet supply and gift shop, and member of Dog and Cat Writer's Associations of America. The article is interesting in that it points out something we pet lovers already know--"What matters is that people are caring for a beloved family member, whether a child, a pet, or both."

The connection between products for children and products for pets and dogs is strong. The article notes two examples:

The parent company for Pet Gear, Inc., the (pet) stroller/play pen company,
is Vermont Juvenile Furniture, makers of children's furniture. Bamboo, started
in 2004, often uses the same products as its mentoring company, Munchkin, a
major player in the baby market for 16 years.

There's no reason why one's pet shouldn't be as protected as a child, so the fact most pet strollers are as well made as children's strollers is a good thing for we pet lovers.

Of course, not all pet strollers are made that well. The Brooklyn Paper has an article about pet strollers. "Hot dog on a roll: Pampered pooch pushed in stroller" is an article about Annie Carnes and “Shadow,” her Toy Yorkie.

Carnes is thrilled with her pet stroller. “It was worth every penny,” she says.

Pet Stroller Theft Caught on Videotape

I feel sorry for the small business owner in this news report from ABC7.com. A mother was arrested for using her child to help shoplift from a small pet store. A male accomplice actually grabs a pet stroller and walks right out of the store. You can see it all on videotape at the ABC site.

The mother was arrested. Why would anyone risk time in jail and having their child taken away when you can pet strollers for under $100 at many sites on the Internet?!?!

Scruffy likes her pet stroller!

Found this interesting post over on a blog maintained by Heidi Rude. She has three adorable kitties--Scruffy, Charlee & Cartier. She also has a pink Happy Trails pet stroller for her cats. She got a pet stroller for Christmas but hasn't been able to take her cats out because she lives in Minneapolis/St. Paul and the weather has been typically winter-like. Turns out Spring has arrived, and she is getting a chance to stroll her cats.

If you visit her blog, you'll find some very cute pix of her cats playing around the stroller. She also tells a funny story about her "shy" cat:

I hadn't been planning on wheeling Scruffy around in the stroller because she is
so shy and timid. I figured she would be afraid of the stroller and want nothing
to do with it. Ironically, Scruffy will most likely be the one riding in the
stroller a majority of the time as she has laid claim to it and gets upset
whenever Cartier or Charlee try to get in.

The article specifically focuses on cats. You may wonder how your kitty can keep you fit. One example is to let your cat help you keep your exercise schedule (since kitties have an impeccable sense of time).

Most of the article focuses on how a pet stroller can help you keep fit by taking strolls or jogs with your feline. Some suggestions from the article include:

Get a "quality pet stroller that is designed for jogging."
Open the cat stroller and leave it sitting out for a few days so your cat can properly mark it as her own property. Let your cat climb in and turn it into one of his or her perches.
Then try an indoor stroll. If your cat enjoys it, reward him or her with a treat and a pet--associate the stroller with pleasurable things.

People Magazine featured a photo of Tori Spelling with her Walk 'n Roll Pet stroller, and it got posted all over the Internet! JustPetStrollers.com supplied the pet stroller to Tori and her husband, Dean McDermott.

PerezHilton, a celeb blog, spoke with Tori and found out poor Mimi La Rue is having hip problems, so the dog stroller is coming in very handy for both human and pooch! It's too had some posters on other blogs have criticized Tori for rolling her dog--they obviously don't know Mimi is suffering from an ailment, and the pet stroller allows Tori to spend more quality time with her pooch!

Why a pet stroller?

ver the years, we've collected much feedback from customers as to how they'll use their pet stroller or why they purchased one for their cats or dogs. Here is that running list, and if you know of other ideas or suggestions to add, please respond and let us know!

Malls (new): You should check first, but some customers are finding that malls will permit dogs and cats if they're in pet stroller rather than on a leash. This isn't common just yet, but who knows--maybe someday all malls will let pet lovers stroll with their four-legged friends!
Service Dogs (new): We've heard from several customers who take their dogs to hospitals and senior homes. Strollers keep their pets contained, but they also elevate the dog so that people in beds and wheelchairs can pet them!
Balconies (new): Some customers with balconies want to let their pets outside but are afraid they may decide to leap. With a pet stroller, these people can get their pets safely from inside to outside so that pets can enjoy the view with their human companions.
Alternative to pet carriers: Rather than using a heavy carrier, some customers find it much easier to use a pet stroller. Why carry your dog or cat when you can roll them more easily?
Older pets: We had one customer thanked us profusely for her "brand new dog." Seems her older pooch was getting exhausted on his walk to the dog park, so once he got there the dog was too pooped to play. Now, the dog is rolled to the dog park and "explodes" from the pet stroller ready to play!
Longer walks: Customers of smaller pooches tell us that their dogs tire out on longer walks. Rather than cut short exercise, folks can walk their dogs until they poop out, then continue long walks with the dogs resting in the stroller!
Multiple dogs: One customer has three Yorkies and found life was much easier when they were in the stroller so they couldn't run in three different directions! She says, "They love it! "
Trips to the vet: One customer said her stroller keeps her pet safer and healthier at the vet's office. "I don't have to worry about them being on the floor with germs from other sick animals. After all, that's why most animals are at the vets."
Traveling: One customer who took a lot of driving trips especially liked the Kittywalk models, which include a detachable carrier and collapsible frame. This allowed her to keep her pet secure while in the car and easily roll the pet into pet-friendly hotels.
Cats: Cats can be tough to walk on leashes--if you don't get them into harnesses at a young age, some cats will never adjust to a harness. A cat stroller is a great way for cats to get some fresh air.
Ice & salt in winter: Northerners reports that their dogs paws take a beating on the ice and salt of roads and sidewalks. Instead, they use a pet stroller to get their dogs to parks where they can play in the snow safely. (Pick a pet stroller with larger wheels for wintertime rolling!)
Festivals: One couple liked to walk their dog to local festivals, but between the crowds, noise, and other aggressive animals, they found it stressful rather than relaxing. With the pet stroller, they keep their small dog safe and the pooch still enjoys getting some fresh air.
Jogging: One athletic customer reported using the pet stroller while jogging. Check out the Jeep Rubicon Pet stroller--made specifically for jogging with your cat or dog!

Aggressive dogs: Another customer had a dog that could get aggressive, so walking him in the dog stroller helped to keep him calm (and other dogs safe.)
More quality time: One customer shared that the stroller simply gave her more quality time with her pet. Using the stroller, she could take her dog more places than she could've otherwise, so she and her pet were enjoying more time together.
Pets at work: One customer takes her cat to work. The stroller makes it easy to do, provides the pet a safe and quiet place to retreat, and keeps her pet in her cubicle rather than roaming around.
Older humans: Pet strollers are great for older pets who aren't as mobile as they used to be, but one customer reports the stroller is great for her 83-years-old mother: She can walk the pet and has something on which to lean as she gets around.
Weather emergencies: One customer said their pet stroller came in very handy during a weather warning. With sirens sounding, she got her pet into the stroller. Luckily, she didn't need to move to shelter, but with her pet in the stroller and items (snacks, radio, etc.) in the pockets, she was ready if she needed to take cover.

Just Pet Strollers was among the sponsors of a charity auction at CharityFolks.com. The auction benefited the Joyful Heart Foundation, an organization that helps to heal the survivors of sexual assault. The charity was founded by lovely and talented Mariska Hargitay.

The Dog Bag that was auctioned was the same one made available to stars at this year's Emmy's. The charity ended a couple of weeks ago with a bid of $800. We hope the winner enjoys their Dog Bag and stroller, and we're happy to have been able to help the Joyful Heart Foundation!

Shoppers and mall walkers who have never seen the pair often do a double-take when they notice the pooch perched on the bench next to John or standing on her hind legs to peer out of her doggie stroller parked at John's side. They leave smiling.

The day after Holyfield bought her, he took Daisy with him to the mall... The first thing he did was ask permission from the mall manager. Holyfield said he was told it was OK to bring his dog as long as she was not allowed to run loose.

A small airbrushed license plate that says "Daisy's Ride" made at a mall store is attached to the front of the stroller.

Skunks are amnog the hippest exotic pets around, these days. Only about 5,000 people keep skunks as pets these days, and the number is growing.

But how do you get skunks around, you may ask? With a pet stroller, of course. That's what Sharon Hradisky of Jamesburg, NJ does, according to an article in the Home News Tribune. Hradisky takes her four skunks for walks in their pet stroller.

Okay, so let's answer the obvious questions: Yes, skunks can be de-scented. Yes, there are breeders. No, skunks as pets are not legal in every state. Skunks are a bit more expensive to keep than more typical pets. And they live eight to 14 years.
